There may be a number of reasons why you can’t hear your own or your baby’s heartbeat.
There may be too much background noise. Please turn off televisions, radios and move from people chatting, singing or making any type of noise. Find a quiet location and relax.
IF THE BABY IS RESTLESS
It is difficult to hear anything if the baby is restless. You will probably hear the sounds of motion and the amniotic fluid as the baby moves, so it is best to wait until the baby calms down.
THE GESTATIONAL AGE
We recommend listening to your baby's heartbeat from week 25 of your pregnancy. In some instances, if the baby is still and in a convenient position, it is possible to hear the heartbeat even from the 18th week.
The position of the baby can determine the effectiveness of Shell. The three most common occurrences are:
1. Fetal position - the baby could be curled up, have its back turned, be facing downward etc.
2. Position of the placenta - it could be in front of the baby obstructing the sound.
3. Position of the baby’s heart in the womb - the baby could be turned towards or away from you.
